Theology must become biography.

That conviction has shaped every book I’ve written.

I write as a pastor in the Dutch Reformed tradition. This means I stand on the teaching of the Word of God as confessed in the ancient church’s creeds and Reformation’s Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, and Canons of Dort. I write as one who is also a lifelong student of the catholic Christian faith. To write for others well is to need those very things for one’s own soul first.

In my books, you’ll learn about the doctrine of God, the authority of Scripture, the person and work of Christ, the person and work of the Holy Spirit, and how it all impacts the life of the church in its public worship and in the life of the believer. I also have an academic interest in how this faith was lived out by the English and Dutch Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries—especially John Owen. The aim of all this writing is never speculation but edification: what we believe about the God who made us, redeemed us, and will take us to himself in glory must become the story of how we pray, sing, baptize, eat at the Lord’s Table, raise children, and endure in the ordinary means of grace.

My books are for pilgrims. I always have an eye on the wandering sheep without a shepherd; I once was one! I seek to answer questions of those coming from broader evangelical or non-denominational churches and who want a clear, charitable introduction to Reformed theology and church life. Others already belong to confessional congregations but want to go deeper. Pastors and elders will also find help with catechesis, church order, children in worship, and the doctrines that actually sustain a congregation over years.
